One hundred and eight inguinal hernias were treated following a standard surgical technique using a 3mm thick loosely woven carbon-fibre patch. The average follow-up was thirteen years. Fifty patients attended a follow-up clinic, twenty-two had died and thirty-six were lost to follow-up. There was no recurrence, no testicular atrophy and no inguinal lymph node involvement. Excellent clinical results without pain were found in all without any restriction of function. The procedure is simple and safe and permeation of the carbon-fibre patch by fibrous tissue produces a lasting repair up to thirteen years.
