Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering have played a leading role in developments in clinical cardiology. Most major technical developments are now carried out in industry, but there is still a very important role for physicists and bioengineers, who need to be on hand to discuss clinical problems with clinical staff, propose solutions and hopefully innovative ideas, and carry out initial assessments. If these developments are taken up by industry, there is still an important role in the evaluation of the technology and proving its clinical effectiveness. In looking at the area of cardiology, what is most obvious is that there are very many gradual developments which year by year push innovation forward for the benefit of patients. This review cannot hope to be complete, but hopefully provides an overview of current developments.
