68 patients referred to a symptomatic breast clinic underwent separate day scintimammography with 740 MBq of Technetium-99m labelled Sestamibi and Oxidronate. 31 patients had subsequent histological confirmation of breast cancer. The primary tumour was identified with both radiopharmaceuticals in 28 patients and missed in 2. A further tumour was missed with Sestamibi but reported as equivocal on Oxidronate imaging. The tumour:background ratios for the 2 radiopharmaceuticals were determined for prone lateral (breasts freely pendant) and supine anterior images. A paired t-test demonstrated no significant difference between the tumour:background count ratios for the 2 radiopharmaceuticals (5% level).
This data supports previously reported data from a smaller series of 7 tumours from the UK (Mackie A. et al 1998, 19: 1101A Nuc. Med. Comm.), which is contrary to the results from another similar sized study of 33 cancers (Nishiyama Y. et al 1999, 213P:1012. Radiol.). The differences between these two studies may be explained by differences in technique and/or patient cohorts.
