The Regional Medical Physics Department is closely connected with several of the region's universities.
At the University of Newcastle upon Tyne the Department of Medical Physics comprises about 30 NHS physicists and engineers, all of whom have honorary appointments within the University. Additionally members of Regional Medical Physics Department have honorary appointments at the University of Sunderland and University of Teesside. Many of the staff teach on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses and are actively engaged in research alongside their NHS duties. The areas of research include:
