What is NHS Direct?

The NHS is committed to providing quicker and easier access to healthcare services. NHS Direct is a 24-hour nurse-led helpline providing confidential healthcare advice and information on:

NHS Direct staff can also provide general information about local health services easily and quickly. For example, if you need to find out which pharmacies are open late or where you can see a dentist out-of-hours, NHS Direct staff will be able to help you.

NHS Direct works hand in hand with other healthcare services provided by the NHS, helping you make the right choice to meet your needs. Calls to NHS Direct are charged at local rates and for patient's safety, all calls are recorded.

Where can I find the address of a GP or hospital?

See under 'Health' in Yellow Pages or telephone NHS Direct on 0845-4647. Alternatively try the NHS web site.

Where can I get medical advice about my own or a friend's condition?

The Regional Medical Physics Department and its staff cannot provide medical advice by e-mail, nor will we enter into any correspondence about personal medical conditions. Please consult a registered medical practitioner for diagnosis and answers to your personal health care questions.

Can you recommend a doctor or surgeon?

We cannot provide recommendations. Please consult a registered medical practitioner.

Can you pass a message to a relative or friend in one of your hospitals?

The Regional Medical Physics Department cannot forward messages to wards, departments or patients on behalf of relatives and friends. If you need to contact a hospital urgently please telephone their main switchboard. Hospital addresses and telephone numbers may be found at: http://www.nhs.uk/

Can you give me the e-mail address of a hospital department or member of staff?

The Regional Medical Physics Department is unable to provide e-mail addresses of hospital departments or their staff. If you need to contact a hospital urgently please telephone their main switchboard. Hospital addresses and telephone numbers may be found at: http://www.nhs.uk/
