Freeman Hospital

The Freeman Unit of the Regional Medical Physics Department is based at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. The hospital's main entrance is off Freeman Road. The Regional Medical Physics Department is in the right hand side of the building, enter via the Cardiothoracic Centre entrance.

Road

Access from the north is via the A1(T) exiting onto the B1318. In Gosforth take the left turn onto the A191 to a double roundabout. Go straight over the first one and turn right at the second, following Freeman Road up the hill. After passing some new houses on your left and a school on your right, the Freeman Hospital will come into view on your left.

Access from the south is via the A1(T) exiting onto the A194(M). Take the A19(T) through the Tyne Tunnel (toll payable) and once north of the Tunnel turn left onto the A1058. After nearly four miles take the exit marked Killingworth, straight across the first mini roundabout, pass Safeway on the right, then turn left at the next roundabout into Cragside. Cross the first roundabout onto Newton Road, then turn right at the second roundabout onto Freeman Road. The hospital's main entrance is on the right.

Air

Disembark at Newcastle International Airport. Take the Metro light rail service to South Gosforth. The hospital is approximately 15 minutes walk. From South Gosforth station go over the foot-bridge and up steps onto the road bridge. Walk down the road passing Steel’s bike shop on your left and a red-brick school building on your right. At the bottom of the hill there is a double roundabout. Go straight over the first one (using the pelican crossing immediately in front of the Brandling Villa Pub) and turn right at the second, following Freeman Road up the hill. After passing some new houses on your left and a school on your right, the Freeman Hospital will come into view on your left.

Rail

Take the Intercity service to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. There is a taxi rank outside the Railway Station. The taxi fare from the Railway Station to Freeman Hospital is about £5 to £6. The hospital is four miles away. Alternatively there is a bus service to the hospital from the stands immediately outside the Railway Station on the left, buses 38, 38A, 38B and 15 all go direct to Freeman Hospital. The bus fare is about £1.

Coach

Disembark at the Gallogate Coach Station. The nearest Metro Station is Saint James opposite the coach station. Change at Monument then board any Metro train to the Airport or the Coast, alighting at South Gosforth. The hospital is approximately 15 minutes walk (see above for further directions).

Bus

From the main entrance to Newcastle Railway Station, turn left before the pelican crossing. The bus stop is straight ahead. The bus fare is about £1. Buses 3, 3B, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 37, 38, 49, 49A all come to or pass Freeman Hospital.

Ambulance

If you need an ambulance please ring your GP who will arrange this for you. If you are unable to keep your appointment please let us know. Telephone 0191-233-6161, extension 26670.
