West Cumberland Hospital

The West Cumbria Unit of the Regional Medical Physics Department is based at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven. The hospital's main entrance is off Homewood Road. Enter via the hospital Main Entrance on Level Three; Medical Physics is on Level Two. Alternatively, from the main Visitor's Car Park enter via the Accident & Emergency entrance, then follow signs to "All Wards & Departments" then "X-Ray". Go past X-Ray reception along two corridors to the Medical Physics Department. See site map below.

Car Parking

There is a charge for parking. Charges and availability may change at short notice. Please check on-site notice boards when you arrive.

Disabled badge holders can park free but must display a valid permit on the windscreen.

Road

Motorway access from the north and south is via the M6 exiting at junction 40 onto the A66, sign posted Keswick, and head west for 35 miles. After bypassing Cockermouth turn left onto the A595 and travel 12 miles to Whitehaven. Keep on the A595 ignoring the signage for the town centre, travel two miles passing through traffic lights and turn left at the roundabout. The hospital's main entrance is on the right 100 yards from the roundabout.

Air

The nearest airports are Newcastle International Airport, Glasgow Airport and Manchester Airport. From Newcastle International Airport take the Metro Light Railway to Central Station, Newcastle upon Tyne then change to the cross country rail service to Carlisle. From Glasgow Airport take the bus service to Glasgow Central Railway Station for the west coast service to Carlisle. From Manchester Airport take the connecting rail service to Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station changing to the west coast service to Carlisle. Change at Carlisle to the local rail service to Whitehaven, the journey time is approximately one hour. Alternatively there is a bus service from Carlisle to Whitehaven which takes one and a half hours. There is a taxi service outside Whitehaven Railway Station. The hospital is two miles away.

Rail

Take the Intercity service to Carlisle. There is a local rail service to Whitehaven. The journey time is approximately one hour. There is a taxi service outside Whitehaven Railway Station. The hospital is two miles away.

Coach

On arrival in Whitehaven disembark at at the bus stop opposite Tesco Supermarket. There is a taxi service at the bus stop. The hospital is two miles away.

Bus

The hospital is served by a local bus service. Bus service 17B, 19, 22, 30 and 30A all stop outside the hospital.

Ambulance

If you need an ambulance transport please ring Medical Physics who will arrange this for you.
