What We Do
The Cumbria Unit based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle provides a range of medical physics services to that and other nearby hospitals, and the Community including:
- Radiation physics - a full range of radiation physics services are provided for the Clinical Oncology Department at Cumberland Infirmary, which sees over 1200 new patients per year, including:
- Radiation dosimetry and associated computing
- Commissioning and quality assurance checks on linear accelerators and other treatment equipment
- Mould Room and treatment aid technology
- Brachytherapy treatments and planning
- Treatment planning (including imaging systems used in radiotherapy)
- Calibration of dosimeters and other instruments
- Shielding design and other aspects of radiation protection
- The development and management of clinical databases with clinical outcome analysis
- Computer network management and development
- Nuclear medicine - over 2200 patient investigations/treatments are provided per annum. Equipment includes large field of view gamma camera and processing workstations, beta and gamma counters and a mass spectrometer for C-13 breath test analysis. The service includes:
- Gamma camera imaging studies of in-vivo radiopharmaceutical distribution
- Non-imaging in-vitro radioisotope tests
- Therapeutic administrations of radioactivity
- C-13 urea breath testing
- Clinical Engineering
- Design and manufacture of assistive technology for people with disabilities
- Regional Rehabilitation Engineering Mobility Service
- Design and manufacture of novel clinical instrumentation
- Planned maintenance and repair of complex radiation equipment such as linear accelerators and CT simulators
- Mechanical and electronic workshop facilities
- Medical device management
- Radiation protection
- Access to radiation protection advice
- Contributions to emergency planning and exercises related to nearby major nuclear site
- General clinical science and engineering
- Interface to further medical physics and clinical engineering expertise elsewhere
