What We Do

The Durham Unit, based at the University Hospital of North Durham (formally Dryburn Hospital), Durham provides a range of medical physics services to that and other nearby hospitals, including:

• Nuclear medicine investigations, both imaging and non-imaging
• GP access bone mineral densitometry investigations
• Urodynamic investigations
• Sleep studies/CPAP therapy
• Nebuliser servicing
• Pedobarograph investigations
• Hand function investigations
• Amputation level assessments
• Technical aid service
• Diagnostic radiology quality assurance
• Clinical instrumentation, electronic and mechanical engineering support

Current Research & Development Activities

• Investigation of the role of breast imaging with radiopharmaceuticals
• Device to assist surgeons with transurethral resection of the prostate
• Follow-up and development of carbon fibre for inguinal hernia repair
• Ankle joints and development of prostheses: studies of loads and stresses
• Mechanical properties of articular cartilage and polyethylene in joint prosthesis
• Development of hip protector for patients at risk of hip fracture
• New cutting technologies
• Development of an apnoea monitor for babies at risk from SIDS
• Functional thermographic imaging
• Functional monitoring of muscle relaxation during anaesthesia
