What We Do
The Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, is the administrative centre of our department and is the home of our senior management team. Our range of medical physics services is divided between two units: Radiation Physics & Imaging and Clinical Measurement & Engineering.
Radiation Physics & Imaging
Head of Unit

This unit provides services including:
- Nuclear Medicine
- Provision of imaging and non imaging radioisotope studies to all clinical departments of the hospital.
- Radiation Protection
- Advice and assistance over all radiation protection matters involving ionising and laser radiation.
- Diagnostic Radiology Physics
- Radiotherapy Physics
Clinical Measurement & Engineering

This unit provides services including:
- Physiological Measurement and Clinical Instrumentation
- Services are provided to clinical departments with special needs for measurement and instrumentation. These currently include orthopaedic backshape measurement, spinal cord monitoring, urodynamics, ano-rectal physiology, sleep studies, cardiac electrophysiology, audiology, balance, and microvascular studies, including thermography, capillaroscopy, plethysmography and pulse assessment.
- Clinical Computing
- Help is given to clinical departments requiring clinical or scientific computing, and development work for clinical services is also undertaken. Services are currently given to Urology, ENT, Histopathology, Cardiology, Intensive Care, Anaesthetics and Speech Therapy, NCCC, Rehabilitation & Intermediate Care Service, Private Patients Services.
- Evaluation
- The Unit contains the Evaluation Centre of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for the evaluation of ECG monitors, patient monitors, blood pressure devices, defibrillators and audiometers.
- Calibration
- Calibration and repair services are provided for audiometers throughout the Northern Region.
