What We Do

The Hartlepool Unit at the University Hospital of Hartlepool (about 375 in-patient beds) and the North Tees Unit at the University Hospital of North Tees (about 510 in-patients beds) provide Medical Physics services to the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust and to local General Practitioners. Together the two Units serve a population of over 400,000 people. The services provided include: nuclear medicine (both sites); ionising radiation protection (at the University Hospital of Hartlepool); urodynamics, laser and a bioengineering technical aids service (at the University Hospital of North Tees). RMPD staff at both sites are the essential interface between local clinical need and the wider services provided by the Department.

The Hartlepool Unit was established in 1994 in high quality, modern, spacious purpose-built accommodation to provide a nuclear medicine service for people living in and around Hartlepool and Peterlee. There is an on-site radiopharmacy which operates under the terms of a Manufacturer's "Specials" Licence granted by the MCA. The radiopharmacy is equipped with an Amercare isolator for radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing, and an MAT laminar air-flow cabinet for blood labelling work. Images are acquired with an IGE Camstar XR/T gamma camera with whole-body scanning and SPECT capability, and hardcopy output is produced on a Kodak Dryview laser imager. An NUD Aerotable enables strain-free patient positioning. Image processing is performed on a Weblinkmedical MAPS 10000 computer system, which was upgraded in 1999 with Sun SPARC Ultra 5 workstations. A Canbera Packard 5003 gamma counter is used for non-imaging procedures.

A full range of routine nuclear medicine procedures are provided within three days for in-patients and within two weeks for out-patients; urgent procedures can often be provided more quickly than this following discussion with the dedicated staff team, a Consultant Medical Physicist and two Clinical Technologists (MTO4 and MTO3). The current annual workload of approximately 1200 nuclear medicine procedures, about 5% of which are radionuclide therapies, is expected to grow to 1400-1500 over the next few years.

The Head of Unit acts as Laser and Radiation Protection Adviser (LPA and RPA) to the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust.
