The Hartlepool Unit at the University Hospital of Hartlepool (about 375 in-patient beds) and the North Tees Unit at the University Hospital of North Tees (about 510 in-patients beds) provide Medical Physics services to the North Tees and Hartlepool (NT&H) NHS Foundation Trust and to local General Practitioners. Together the two Units serve a population of over 400,000 people. The services provided include: nuclear medicine (both sites); ionising radiation protection (at the University Hospital of Hartlepool); urodynamics (at the University Hospital of North Tees). RMPD staff at both sites are the essential interface between local clinical need and the wider services provided by the Department.
The Hartlepool Unit was established in 1994 in high quality, modern, spacious purpose-built accommodation to provide a nuclear medicine service for people living in and around Hartlepool and Peterlee. There is an on-site radiopharmacy which operates under the terms of a Manufacturer's "Specials" Licence granted by the MCA. The radiopharmacy is equipped with an Amercare isolator for radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing, and an MAT laminar air-flow cabinet for blood labelling work. Images are acquired with an IGE Infinia II gamma camera with whole-body scanning and SPECT capability. Image processing is performed on a Link Medical MAPS 10000 computer system. Images are sent to the NT&H PACS. A Canberra Packard 5003 gamma counter is used for non-imaging procedures.
A full range of routine nuclear medicine procedures are provided within three days for in-patients and within two weeks for out-patients; urgent procedures can often be provided more quickly than this following discussion with the dedicated staff team, a Consultant Medical Physicist and three Clinical Technologists. The annual workload in 2009/10 was approximately 2200 nuclear medicine procedures.
The Head of Unit acts as Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) to the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust.
