What We Do

The West Cumbria Unit based at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven provides a range of medical physics services to the hospital and local Community, including:

• Nuclear medicine
  • Gamma camera imaging studies of in-vivo radiopharmaceutical distribution
  • Non-imaging in-vitro radioisotope tests
  • Therapeutic administrations of radioactivity
  • C-13 urea breath testing
• Clinical measurement
  • Lung function studies
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Nebuliser transactions
  • Lactose intolerance testing
  • Other occasional miscellaneous tests
• Radiation protection
  • Access to radiation protection advice
  • Contributions to emergency planning and exercises related to nearby major nuclear site
• General clinical science and engineering
  • Assistive technology
  • Medical device management
  • Interface to further medical physics and clinical engineering expertise elsewhere
