For patients who have undergone laryngectomy, voice restoration is usually achieved by fitting a small prosthetic valve between their trachea and oesophagus. The device we have developed measures the air pressure within the patient's trachea while they speak. The pressure is displayed on an array of coloured LEDs, this gives valuable information to the Speech & Language Therapist and provides biofeedback to the patient. The pressure meter can be connected to a PC and software written in-house allows the data to be displayed graphically.
