Dr John Allen recently had the honour of attending a special reception hosted by the Prime Minister and Mrs Blair, to celebrate those delivering excellence in Public Services. Dr Allen, who is a principal medical physicist based at Freeman Hospital, has established leading UK diagnostic services for patients with microvascular disease. In addition, his pulse research work exploiting 'light' to provide low-cost and easy-to-use methods of vascular disease detection was instrumental in the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust/Cardiovascular Physics and Engineering Research Group winning the 2006 national NHS Health and Social Care team award for innovative medical technology (see story and picture below). The reception, one of Mr Blair's last official public engagements, was held at Lancaster House in London on June 13th 2007.

The Cardiovascular Physics and Engineering Research Group of Newcastle University and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at Freeman Hospital's Regional Medical Physics Department, has won the national NHS Health and Social Care Award for Innovative Technology.
Many years of scientific research and development in optical pulse measurement and analysis technology applied to vascular diagnostics have paid off. The team has completed the first key stage in the development of a unique low-cost and easy-to-use system for detecting peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in a primary care (GP) setting. Professor Alan Murray and Dr John Allen attended the recent London awards ceremony to receive the prize from the Chief Scientific Officer of the Department of Health on behalf of the pulse project development team.
The development team also includes Clive Griffiths, Dr Andrew Sims, Dr Fiona Smith, Dr Mark Fisher, Dr Richard Hoare (NHS Innovations North), and Professor Gerry Stansby (The Northern Vascular Centre).
