RMPD Wins Two IPEM Awards

The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine have awarded this year's Roy Ellis Award to Robert Beckwith (Mechanical Engineering at the RVI Unit), and this year's Founders' Prize to Dr. Claire-Louise Chapple (Radiation Physics at the NGH Unit).

The Roy Ellis Award is made annually to a technologist who has made a significant contribution to the field of medical technology by way of a distinguished paper of project report. Rob Beckwith's award was primarily for work undertaken at the instigation of the Department of Reproductive Medicine at the RVI, consisting of the design and construction of a moveable microscope workstation that incorporated an extremely effective anti-vibration facility. This workstation is now used routinely to facilitate the delicate manipulations needed for in-vitro fertilisation which are done under microscope control. Rob's successful design has been adopted by a commercial firm who now manufacture these cabinets under licence from RMPD.

The Founders' Prize is made annually for distinction in the practice of physics or engineering in relation to medicine. Candidates must be aged 35 or less and the overall contribution of their career to date is assessed. The particular aspect of Claire-Louise's work emphasised in the nomination for the award was her contribution over a number of years to the development of techniques for patient dosimetry in diagnostic radiology (including paediatric and CT), and her implementation of those techniques to form the basis for the expanding range of regional patient dosimetry services which we now provide.
