The Regional Medical Physics Department (RMPD) is actively involved with the development of the Intellectual Property Hub. The Hub will cover the former NHS Northern Region and will systematically identify, protect and exploit the Intellectual Property of NHS Trusts and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). Written support has been received from 30 NHS Trusts and PCTs in the region as well as Government Office North East; the Regional Development Agency One North East and the five Universities in the region.
The operational and management of the Hub will be contracted to RTC North based in Sunderland and the lead organisation will be the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
A Steering Committee has been established and will include, among others, Mr Len Fenwick (Chief Executive of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and Professor Brian Diffey (Head of RMPD). An awareness and training programme will target Trusts and PCTs in the new year to identify and access intellectual property. Thereafter there will be a screening, evaluation and protection phase with a view to possible commercial exploitation.
