Norman Veall Award

I am delighted to report that David Williams, who has been head of the Sunderland Unit of RMPD and also Regional Head of Nuclear Medicine Services since 1979, was awarded the Norman Veall Medal by the British Nuclear Medicine Society at its Annual Scientific Conference in Manchester on 16th March 2005.

The award recognises a non-medical scientist who has made an outstanding contribution to the science and/or practice of nuclear medicine in the United Kingdom. The citation mentioned a career involving a substantial record of publications, responsibilities for clinical services and service to national professional societies.

The medal was instituted to honour the memory of Dr Norman Veall (1919 - 1991), a pioneer of nuclear medicine and medical physics, who devised and made many early and original applications of radioactive materials to solve problems in medicine and physiology. He also wrote the standard textbook on the subject in that era: 'Radioisotope Techniques in Clinical Research and Medicine' published in 1958.
