The IPEM 2006 Manufacturer's Award has gone to Bill Allan, Consultant Physicist in our Sunderland Unit for his design of the Sunderland Air Pressure Meter, which was developed for patients who have had their larynx removed due to cancer and have lost the ability to speak. It measures air pressure in the patient's windpipe, allowing the correct selection of prosthetic speech valve to help patients talk again and is now commercially available via our technology transfer programme. Bill won the National NHS Innovation Award for 2005 for this instrument.
