Northern England boasts many areas of outstanding natural beauty, a plethora of historical sites and numerous places of interest just a short drive away from its major population centres. The towns and cities have transformed from the domination of recession ridden industries to become vibrant, forward looking centres of culture, attracting major businesses with its low costs and excellent transport links to the rest of the UK.
The area has much to offer those who love the countryside and its history. There are four National Parks; the Lake District, North York Moors, Northumberland and the Yorkshire Dales. The North Pennines is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; Kielder Water, Europe's largest man-made lake, is fast becoming a centre for watersports and the surrounding forest and moorland attracts many visitors. The Northumbrian coastline boasts many fine, secluded beaches.
There are two World Heritage Sites; Durham Cathedral & Castle built by the Normans over 900 years ago, and Hadrian's Wall, raised by the Romans in 122AD. Beamish North of England Open Air Museum brings the social history of the north to life with many preserved buildings and machines from all over County Durham.
Commercially, Northern England is well served by major chain stores, specialist stockists and service providers in its traditional shopping centres, retail parks and industrial estates. There is a wide range of housing available to suit all tastes and incomes. Public transport serves all but the most remote communities, services in the major population areas are frequent.
