Clinical Technologist Training Scheme

In 1982, Department of Health set-up an In-Service Training Scheme for Medical Technologists. The Regional Medical Physics Department took this training programme and used it to provided training for medical technologists across the full range of disciplines. Over the years RMPD developed the training scheme and in the early 1990's produced assessment criteria.

Following the appointment of a new member of staff to a Technologist post or a change of post/upgrading of existing staff, the training needs were assessed through a training review. This identified staff who require basic training and the specific training programme required. These staff were then registered on the RMPD Technologist In-Service Training Scheme.

In 2001 the Institute of Physics and Engineering (IPEM) produce a new training scheme prospectus for Clinical Technologists.

In 2003 The Regional Medical Physics Department applied for and obtained Accreditation as a Training Centre under a transitional arrangement.

The same initial training review process is still used to identify appointees who require training. For those identified as needing training, a decision is now made as to whether to register the member of staff on the IPEM Scheme or provide training through other means such as the RMPD In-service Training Scheme or specialised training courses or programmes.

The IPEM training changed in 2005 to reflect the Scopes of Practice outlined through the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists and the degree level prospectus that was developed by the profession.

The Scope of Practice covers 7 disciplines 4 Engineering based and 3 Physics based

Technologist training occurs in every unit of the Regional Medical Physics Department, although training does not take place in all subject areas at each Unit. Where training cannot be carried out in the home unit, the trainee will be expected to attend a unit that can provide that particular aspect of the training.

Some trainees will be expected as part of their training programme to attend an academic institution (University or College)
